From last week’s very dramatic episode to this week’s rather confusing saga between a pastor and his fiancée, we can’t help but wonder where the producers of this show find such couples. Do they really exist? Is this show scripted? Well, by the looks of its second episode, everything about You Promised to Marry Me is legit.
No more lobola negotiations
The second episode introduces us to a lady by the name of Nondumiso Sijwe. Nondumiso is heartbroken after her boyfriend of three years, Moemedi, proposed and then suddenly dropped everything on the day of their lobola negotiations.
This sudden act of selfishness not only affected Nondumiso but her mother and aunt as well.
“We prepared everything on Friday. They were supposed to come that Saturday. On Friday we went to town, we bought everything in preparation for the special occasion but when I got home I found Nondumiso in a state. I am then told that Moemedi cancelled the lobola negotiations.
“We bought new outfits, food, basically everything – only for it to be cancelled,” says the mother.
Understandably, Nondumiso is disappointed, as she thought Moemedi was going to be the man she spends the rest of her life with. Their situation is extremely complicated as the two also have a child together.
Sacrifices made for nothing
Apart from the heartbreak, Nondumiso is also very angry at Moemedi, especially considering the many sacrifices she made for their relationship to work.
“At church, if you’re part of a worship team, sex before marriage is seen as a sin. I fell pregnant just after his proposal. Unfortunately, because of my pregnancy, I was removed from the worship team. I also financially helped him, I gave this relationship my all,” says Nondumiso.
The confrontation
Nondumiso, her mother, aunt and the crew finally make it to Moemedi’s home, guns blazing. What makes matters worse is that Moemedi is found in the house with another woman. He attempts to douse the fire by explaining that the woman is his colleague and only came over to watch some television, but no one is buying his explanation.
Moemedi is clearly not impressed with all the attention he’s receiving.
“So bringing cameras in here is your way of showing me that you love me?” asks Moemedi.
He is then given the opportunity to explain why he cancelled the lobola negotiations.
“She’s very aggressive. And she accused me of stalking her, and that I am controlling.”
Moemedi added that he also began to not trust her after she mentioned that she was flirting with someone.
Nondumiso explains that she told him about the flirting because they were not communicating anymore and that Moemedi had told her that he needs his space.
Bring my stuff back
The two aren’t aren’t reaching common ground.
To be even more spiteful, Nondumiso requests that Moemedi either returns the items she bought for him or he repays her in cash.
These items include the curtains that are currently hanging in his home, as well as pots and a computer.
Moemedi eventually opts to give back all of Nondumiso’s belongings.
The second episode of You Promised to Marry Me is now streaming on DStv Now and expires on 29 December 2020.
