As was abundantly clear in the finale of Season Three of Uthando Nes’thembu, the ladies’ tolerance for each other is wearing thin. (Seasons 1 to 4 are ready to binge-watch on Showmax.)
The Mseleku wives are slowly but surely showing their true colours, and in this third season, it has become quite evident that the ladies are not as fond of each other as we have been lead to believe. Well, apart from MaCele; since season one, she’s made it quite clear that she has never been a fan of her fellow sister-wives.
In this third instalment, Musa Mseleku found himself juggling between keeping all four of his wives happy, while still grappling with the challenge of mending his broken relationship with Sne, his eldest daughter.
Keeping his wives happy has been going well so far – remember when he bought new a new Mercedes-Benz vehicle for each of his wives. Now that’s what we call an expensive token of appreciation.
The big days
He then kept his promise of organising individual weddings for each of the wives. And yes, we’re confused as you are. We assumed that all four weddings had already occurred, but that turned out not to be the case.
First to celebrate their weddings were MaCele and MaYeni.
Although both ceremonies were a success, the weddings came with a bit of drama that saw MaCele expressing her disapproval of her sister wives, MaKhumalo and MaNgwabe.
What happened, you ask?
Well, during the wedding, MaCele felt that MaKhumalo and MaNgwabe had stepped out of line after both ladies welcomed MaCele into the Mseleku household as an official bride. Traditionally, MaCele and MaKhumalo were not supposed to do that.
According to traditional customs, all sister-wives are supposed to be at their own houses when the bride enters her husband’s household. MaCele can be easily annoyed, and the other ladies’ actions rubbed her up the wrong way.
MaKhumalo then had a second strike as she found herself in MaYeni’s bad books after she made a snarky remark about a particular traditional process during MaYeni’s wedding.
The comment did not sit well with MaYeni who had no choice but to respond with a comment that was just as catty.
Some viewers were so riled up by MaKhumalo’s comment that they couldn’t help but express glee over MaYeni’s fiery response to MaKhumalo.
Uthando Nesthembu has taught us two things in its third seaon. One: polygamous marriage is one complicated contract to bind yourself into, and two: this show is undoubtedly one of the most entertaining South African reality shows to air on Mzansi Magic.
