As massive fans of The River, we couldn’t be more excited that the hit telenovela has been given this covetable recognition on the world stage!
The nominees were announced this week and the show is up against telenovelas from other countries including Portugal and Brazil. Reacting to the big news on Thursday, the show’s co-creator Phathu Makwarela simply posted crying emojis on Twitter. Phathu’s timeline was flooded with congratulatory messages from fans and industry peers.
In a statement, M-Net CEO, Nkateko Mabaso said: “1Magic would like to thank everyone involved in the success of the show.”
The River has been on our air for almost two years and has become one of Mzansi’s most loved TV shows. At this year’s South African Film and Television Awards (SATFAs), the hit telenovela walked away with several awards including Best Telenovela.
We’re not surprised that the show has received this nod because it stars some of the country’s biggest actors including Sindi Dlathu (Lindiwe Dlamini-Dikana), Hlomla Dandala (Zweli Dikana) and Presley Chweneyagae (Cobra). We would like to congratulate the whole team involved and we hope they’ll bring this one home.
The 2019 International Emmy Awards will take place on 25 November in New York City. We’re all waiting for the big day to come! In the meantime, you can catch up on this hit telenovela on Showmax and on DStv Now every weekday.
