Sabelo Ncengwa (25) is married to Nobuhle Dladla (23), both currently residing in Johannesburg. His mother lives back home and Ncengwa wants to take a second wife who will live and take care of his mother while he works in the city.
“The reason I want to take a second wife is that MaDladla lives in Joburg and she’s studying. I want a second wife because my mom complains that she needs someone to help her,” Ncengwa explains.
As always, Musa Mseleku’s role is to help the men explain to their first wives why a polygamous marriage is a good idea for their family.
MaSithole is on board
MaSithole (22) has a huge task ahead of her. If she marries Ncengwa, she’ll be shipped to the homelands to look after her husband’s mother.
“We met in Joburg and I opened up to her about everything, my marriage and why I want her to be my second wife,” says Ncengwa.
Mseleku is sceptical about Ncengwa’s reason.
“There might be external factors about why you’re choosing this path as a man. But, the external factors can’t be the main reason why you want to be in a polygamous marriage,” says Mseleku.
When Mseleku meets MaSithole, she reassures him that she is well aware of Ncengwa’s plans and she is 100% on board.
“I was born and raised in the village, I just came to Soweto to study. I went to the village during the school holidays. So the village life won’t be difficult for me.”
Let’s hope she’s not biting off more than she can chew!
An unpleasant surprise
Before Ncengwa arrived with Mseleku, he tells MaDladla that he has a surprise for her. MaDladla is all smiles when she sees Mseleku walk through the door. But the smile quickly turns to a frown when Ncengwa reveals the surprise.
“I don’t think I get you,” says MaDladla after Ncengwa tells her about MaSithole. “On what grounds?” She asks.
Ncengwa then further explains his reason for wanting a polygamous marriage – MaDladla is livid at this point.
MaDladla rejects his reasoning as it makes her feel as though she isn’t enough. “Am I no help to them? When I go home during the holidays don’t I go there to help?”
MaDladla is very disappointed. She thought the suprise would be a dinner date, but instead, it is a proposal for a sister wife.
Should MaDladla stop going to school?
Mseleku attempts to be the mediator and calm the tension. He asks MaDladla what she thinks about the situation and if she would be willing to stop studying and go back to the village to take care of the family.
MaDladla then begins to explain that she wishes Ncengwa had spoken to her earlier because she doesn’t like the fact that he lied about the entire surprise.
Ncengwa doesn’t want her to stop studying. “I was mindful of the fact that she was studying, so I couldn’t ask her to stop her studies. In the end she would have resented me for making her quit her studies.”
MaSithole joins the conversation and states her intentions, and MaDladla begins to accept the idea of them being sister wives.
“I have agreed because of the way things are back home,” MaDladla finally admits.
MaSithole says she cannot believe that MaDladla agreed in the end – she’s grateful to her for her acceptance.
