As we continue with the Season 2 reunion, it’s time for the Langa household to iron out their issues. Langa (the husband) paid for his second wife MaSithole’s lobola before speaking to his first wife, MaShelembe. Now the chickens have come to roost.
MaSithole is here to stand in the middle
In a previous meeting, MaSithole claimed to be the pillar of the Langa family. She told Mseleku that there’s nothing anyone can do about that; she is here to build and no one is going to stand in her way.
During the reunion, MaMthombeni confronts MaSithole about whether or not she knows the meaning of the word “pillar” because from MaMthombeni’s perspective, all she’s doing is coming in the middle of two people who are already standing up straight.
MaSithole replies by saying if her being a pillar means she’s going to come between Langa and MaShelembe then she’s going to stand right in the middle. MaSithole says that the only person seeking approval here is Langa and not her. It doesn’t matter to MaSithole whether MaShelembe agrees or not.
You are a snake
When the Langa family arrived at the hotel, MaShelembe realised that there were only two room bookings for them; one for Langa and one of his wives to share, and another for his other wife to sleep in alone. When MaSithole was told of this, she refused to allow it and asked for all three of them to be separated.
This enraged MaShelembe because she realised that she was lied to by Langa. She accuses Langa of being influenced by MaSithole and choosing MaSithole over MaShelembe because that’s not the story he told her. “You’re a snake. You’re a mamba,” MaShelembe calls her husband.
MaShelembe: “I’m leaving”
Mseleku warns Langa about letting MaSithole be the sole decision-maker amongst them. “If the reins are to be given to the rightful owner so that this matter can be fixed, they must share a bed and MaSithole needs to accept that.”
In response to Mseleku, MaSithole gives her side of the story and says yes, she did ask for the rooms to be separated because she didn’t want any squabbles. She was the one who was actually supposed to share a bed with Langa that evening.
“I thought we would continue with the schedule when we get back home. Because we are not at home, everyone has to sleep in separate rooms. I didn’t do it to be spiteful or anything like that”, MaSithole explains.
MaShelembe continues to tell Langa that she’s had enough, she’s leaving. The audience seems to be on MaShelembe’s side as they tell MaSithole to humble herself and not disrespect MaShelembe.
MaSithole has too much access and control in the household, a control that the audience thinks Langa should take back. “My brother, this needs your intervention, something is amiss. There’s nothing you can do without the consent of your first wife. It seems as if your second wife holds all the power; that’s why she has access even to your parents, as she told us about it. You messed this up, you must fix it”, Macingwane says.
