Tensions have been rising as work demands and drug habits get in the way and even the most optimistic viewer probably doesn’t see much hope for the couple at this point.
FC Porto calling
While Esther’s musical career is hanging by a thread after she missed a performance that she really can’t afford to sleep on (but she did, literally) Makwande has been working hard to secure his big move to Portuguese giants FC Porto (where Benni Mccarthy won the Champion’s League in real life but that’s a story for another day).
After scoring the match-winning goal in front of the Porto scouts, thus securing his dream move, he decides to celebrate by partying it up with other friends instead of calling his girlfriend to join in on the fun. Esther doesn’t take kindly to this and on her best friend Millicent’s advice, she decides to enjoy a good time of her own and heads over to Casanova where she learns the hard way that sadness, drugs and booze are a deadly combination.
Of course, when you drink and take strong substances, you can expect a killer hangover the next day and Esther feels as if her head is as “heavy as a watermelon” by the time she wakes up – although she suspects she may have been spiked.
She and Makwande still haven’t spoken and Millicent believes that Esther probably needs some time away from the footballer – even though neither of them knows that he’s about to board a plane for Portugal to begin the next leg of his career.
Matters of the heart
The secrets don’t end there and even Makwande doesn’t know about the biggest one yet, until he pays a visit to the doctor. She informs him that he is currently battling a life-threatening heart condition that puts his whole career into jeopardy and pretty much ends all hope of securing his dream move to the Portuguese champions.
Although the doctor could only say it was a heart murmur, Makwande fears that he could have a condition called cardiomyopathy – which is a life-threatening as it sounds. He decides to “return home”, much to Esther’s delight and his father’s concern. Instead of opening up about his condition and telling Esther and his father what’s going on, he lies about the reasons why his move to Porto didn’t work out – claiming he didn’t want to be on the bench.
Esther buys the explanation but his father doesn’t. While she’s out, he and Makwande get into a heated argument as his father believes that it’s Esther who thwarted his son’s big move, claiming she will ruin him. Makwande (not so kindly) asks his father to leave but little did they know that someone was listening the whole time.
A squeaky third wheel
Millicent has not left her friend’s side since that night in the club and it’s fair to say that things have become a bit weird since Makwande has come back to discover that he has another house mate (who he didn’t ask for or invite).
Millicent certainly cares for Esther, but she’s quickly becoming a third wheel and is getting very comfortable in Makwande’s house. She even invited her new flame, Thabo, over for an indoors date. It might sound cute, but Makwande definitely is not feeling the romance and seems to grow more frustrated every time he bumps into her in his home. He’s doing very little to hide his irritation.

Distracted by his annoyance, Makwande is unaware of the fact that Millicent has got her own intentions for him. She’s already begun planting seeds about his behaviour and is slowly beginning to turn Esther’s head in a different direction.
For instance, while Makwande was away, Millicent blurted out the dirty details of the argument she overheard him having with his dad. That’s not such a big deal – the problem is that Millicent told Esther a slightly different version of events and now Esther is second-guessing her man’s intentions.
With his health, career and relationship all in jeopardy, Makwande surely feels as if his life is slowly crumbling right before his very eyes.
