Vusi Kunene (54) is no stranger to the SA TV industry. His work in the acting space dates back to the early 90s. He has also appeared in various international films such as Cry The Beloved Country, A United Kingdom and more.
However, it was his role on SABC soapie Generations: The Legacy that catapulted his fame to even greater heights. Kunene then took his talents to SAFTA-winning telenovela Isibaya from 2012 to 2016.
In true Vusi Kunene style, he then took a bit of a TV hiatus but has now returned to play the character of Rodney “Uncle Rod” Sibeko in Gomora.
Rodney is described as a favourite with Thathi’s children. He’s the uncle who can do no wrong, the uncle who showed up for school activities when their father (Mbongeni) couldn’t be bothered.
The man is cunning, cut-throat and the epitome of self-entitled. He wants what he wants, when he wants it. He may have had his fingers in some of Mbongeni’s corrupt pies, but nothing points to him.
On Tuesday, Kunene made his debut on the show and viewers expressed their delight at seeing one of South Africa’s most talented of thespians back on their TV screens again.
In his first scene, Uncle Rodney is seen offering Thathi an offer she can’t refuse. However, the offer Rodney made already has viewers wary about his supposed act of kindness.
New episodes of Gomora air on Mzansi Magic from 25 May 2020 at 19:30 and on Showmax from 1 June 2020. Catch up on all episodes of the telenovela on Showmax and on DStv Now.
