It’s been weeks since Detective Mahlasela lost the only key evidence that could implicate Mam’Sonto in the death of Gift.
Where – and what – is the key evidence?
Mam’Sonto is in a state of panic after realising that the brooch gifted to her by Thathi and Pretty is missing. The last time she wore the brooch was on the day Gift demanded a lump sum of money from her to keep his mouth shut about a gun that could implicate her in another murder case.
Annoyed by Gift’s blackmailing, Mam’Sonto strangled him to death.
Unfortunately for her, she left her brooch at the murder scene, and it was later discovered by Detective Mahlasela.
However, Detective Mahlasela soon finds out that one of the policemen lost the brooch and can’t seem to find it. Little do they know that the brooch fell under the table in the detective’s office.
Skipping the country
Mam’Sonto hasn’t been able to find the piece of jewellery ever since she realised that it is the only key evidence that has the potential of getting her arrested.
What’s worse is that Nthati is now in cahoots with the detective. Thati desperately wants to get to the bottom of Gift’s murder as she can’t shake the feeling that her mother, Mam’Sonto, was also involved in the murder of her husband.
Mam’Sonto realises that not only the law but her own daughter is onto her. In a conversation with MaZet, she decides that the best thing for her to do is to skip the country.
“If we don’t find the brooch, my child, they’ll come for me. I think we have to leave South Africa,” she tells MaZet.
MaZet thinks that’s a drastic move and assures her boss that she’ll find a replica of the brooch. Mam’Sonto has given up all hope.
The brooch is found
Time really is up for Mam’Sonto. A cleaner at the police station finds the brooch and hands it over to an elated detective.
Detective Mahlasela immediately calls Thati and summons her to the police station. Mam’Sonto eavesdrops on the conversation and immediately figures out that the call is about her arrest.
While she’s packing her belongings and a large stack of money, MaZet walks in and presents to her a brooch that looks exactly like the one she lost.
Mahlasela and Thati’s disappointment
The two barge into Mam’Sonto’s office, all smiles. The detective explains that they have a warrant for her arrest as they finally found her brooch, which was discovered at the murder scene.
Mam’Sonto sits behind her desk cool as a cucumber and before they can gloat any further, she reveals the brooch pinned to her chest.
The detective and Thati stare in disbelief. It’s Mam’Sonto’s time to gloat now.
