DiepCity: Meet Nompumelelo Vilakazi aka Sne

In this instalment of our deep dive into the cast of DiepCity, we get to know Nompumelelo Vilakazi, who plays Sne.

By Xabiso Ngqabe

The latest addition to Mzansi Magic’s prime-time viewing is sometimes a difficult one to watch as it delves into a story of poverty, heartbreak, redemption, and hope all encompassed into one crime thriller.

If you haven’t watched it yet, DiepCity tells the story of four young women who struggle with the ups and downs of life. But what is heartbreaking, is that with every episode that airs, the young women experience more losses than wins. To make their way in life, they then make the difficult decision of getting involved in a life of crime.

Each new episode comes with its very limited victories and many losses. And no one receives as many losses as Sne, who is portrayed by 23-year-old Nompumelelo Vilakazi.

Here are some lesser-known facts we’ve come to learn about the actress.

She hails from KwaZulu-Natal

Nompumelelo was born and bred in Bergville, a small town situated in the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains in KZN.

A qualified teacher

The actress matriculated from Ntathakusa Secondary School in Winterton, KwaZulu-Natal, before furthering her studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2017.

She studied and obtained a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree and majored in Life Sciences and Geography.

Deeply rooted in theatre

Although she studied Education, Nompumelelo comes from a theatre background. While still in school, she took part in various local theatre productions, and it is was the skills she learned in theatre that assisted her in bagging her first role on television.

How she got discovered

It’s amazing how many opportunities social media has offered to people looking to fulfil their dreams.

The actress was discovered by Black Brain Productions via an Instagram live audition. This audition not only marked the beginning of her journey on DiepCity but also her first-ever role on a TV series.

Catch Nompumelelo and the rest of her crew on DiepCity every weekday on Mzansi Magic, channel 161, or on DStv online.
