When watching internet TV on a mobile device, it makes sense to pay as little as possible for data, so we’ve rounded up some of the best deals and lowest prices for video data bundles in South Africa.
Don’t forget that toggling app settings on your phone to stream on the lowest possible quality will save data. On smartphone screens, it’s not necessary to stream in HD or on the highest quality settings. Showmax also has the functionality to put a cap on the amount of data used while streaming.
These streaming bundles have been available to Telkom Mobile subscribers since 2017, but it was only last year that Telkom added a whole lot of new options. Choose from daily, weekly and monthly bundles to stream series and movies on Netflix, Showmax or DStv Now.
Among the best-value Telkom LIT bundles are R40 for a 500MB monthly bundle, R50 for a 2GB daily bundle and R150 for a 5GB weekly bundle. These prices are much lower than those of standard data bundles, making Telkom LIT the best-value option for streaming video on a mobile device.
Plus, Telkom Free Me 5GB customers automatically get 50GB free data every month to use for streaming Netflix, Showmax and DStv Now.
With the new Vodacom and Showmax Mobile deal, you’ll get a Showmax Mobile subscription, which will allow you to stream Showmax Mobile on your smartphone or tablet (it won’t work for any other devices, including casting devices) as well as 2GB of data from Vodacom to use for Showmax every month, for a total of R99 per month. This is the same cost as the standard Showmax subscription without any data included.
You need to be a Vodacom customer to get this deal.
You should be able to stream around 10 hours of series and movies with 2GB on the lowest quality setting on your device, as long as you use Showmax’s data-saving tips, such as putting a cap on your data. There’s a neat guide here.
