Just when we thought Jub Jub was done with bringing the drama and mayhem on our TV screens, he returns with another reality show that has people talking.
What is You Promised To Marry Me about?
In a nutshell, the reality show circles around people who feel misled by their partner’s broken promises to marry them – with the help of Jub Jub, they track down their lover in the hopes of getting answers.
Nqobile, a woman with a heavy and broken heart
In the first episode, we are introduced to a lady by the name of Nqobile, who explains that she has been in a relationship with her partner for seven years.
According to Nqobile, the process leading up to their wedding was going according to plan until everything came to a sudden halt. Without any warning, her fiancé cancelled everything a week before the wedding took place.
So why was the wedding cancelled?
It turns out that the decision to cancel the wedding was influenced by the groom’s family, who felt that the couple could not afford the wedding, and also that they were not informed of the two getting married. This led to them not agreeing with the wedding.
The dire situation has affected Nqobile in such a negative way that she contemplated committing suicide.
“He’s a part of me. I feel really empty when he’s not close to me. I think about him all the time. We’ve been through a lot, he had nothing when I fell in love with him. No one noticed him until I became a part of his life,” says a teary Nqobile.
Here comes the bride
What transpires next is a case of lies and mayhem. In the hopes of helping Nqobile get her dream wedding, Jub Jub takes her to her partner’s family home. To add more fuel to the fire, Nqobile arrives at the homestead dressed in her wedding gown – an indication that she is ready to have her wedding NOW!
Get out!
Upon their arrival at the groom’s home, the family is shocked at what is happening in their yard. Unfortunately, the person Nqobile came for is unavailable. However, her partner’s elder brothers are present and are not impressed with Nqobile’s grand entrance into their home.
“In my culture, you should’ve announced yourself at the gate and asked to see the head of the house, then we would’ve let you in. How did you get in? Please get out,” says Mr Shabangu, the eldest brother.
Out of respect, Nqobile and the crew leave the house and are only allowed to enter the household once the family is ready for them. The Shabangu family also requests that Nqobile take off the wedding gown before entering the house as it is a sign of disrespect.
Lies, confusion and mayhem
Upon entering the house the second time around, Jub Jub then gets to the bottom of this entire ordeal. What is revealed next by the brothers puts Nqobile in an unfavourable light.
“Nqobile used to live here. She would bring other men in here. The neighbours can tell you that she used to get picked up by other men,” says the brother.
The brothers also explained she was not denied a wedding: it turns out that it was Nqobile who left. It gets worse: according to the Shabangu family, Nqobile hasn’t been at the Shabangus in almost three years.
Explain yourself
Nqobile is asked to explain herself because, from where we’re standing, she is not only a liar but a cheater as well.
Nqobile then mumbles about some man who gifted her with a new cellphone. She continues to explain that her man was not happy about that.
Her story just doesn’t add up, and as the camera continues to roll, it is becoming clear that Nqobile is hiding something.
Who is this man?
Now we know that Jub Jub is always full of surprises, and without informing anyone, he suddenly calls for someone to enter the house.
It turns out that the man who comes into the house is Nqobile’s lover!
The man admits that Nqobile is his girlfriend and is just as shocked as everyone else about what is transpiring in this house.
“I just came from Ermelo. I was called and told that Nqobile is getting married and I must come and see for myself,” says the boyfriend.
The man continues to throw Nqobile under the bus by mentioning that she lied about her engagement ring when he asked her about it.
“When I met her, I asked her what the ring was for, she said it was her mother’s and it was the only thing she had left of her.”
A confusing ending
The episode suddenly fast-forwards to two weeks later. Nqobile has decided not to continue with the wedding and is now officially single.
Really? After all the drama you caused, you decide not to have your wedding?
She explains that her ex-fiancé called and was not impressed with the stunt she pulled at his family’s house.
And that’s that. We can’t wait to see what the next episode has in store.
