Peer pressure is not just a problem for young people, you know. Sometimes, even grown people find themselves in situations where they have to do whatever it takes to get accepted. Martha proved this on the latest episode of Black Tax S2. She discovered that the Women’s Guild at her church had a secret chat group and she wanted to be part of it. So, what did she do to get in?
Well, Martha heard that the church would be looking for a lead singer and were planning to hold singing auditions. This was surely her chance to shine, she thought. “My granddaughter, she’s the main singer at the school choir,” she said. If Sihle joined the church choir, this would give Martha the opportunity to be part of the prestigious chat group.
Lulu saves the day
There was one problem, though. Martha hadn’t anticipated the fact that Sihle just couldn’t hold a note. While they were singing Amazing Grace on the patio, their nosey neighbour Lulu – who happens to be Sihle’s schoolmate – heard them. She told Sihle to stop singing because, let’s face it, she’s not gifted in that area.
Lulu proved that she could do it better and this caught Martha’s attention. She came up with a plan and told the girls about it. “Sihle, you would have a different mic, pretend as though you are singing, and then you [Lulu] would have a different mic, you’ll be upstairs and when you sing, people will think that Sihle is singing.” Gogo Martha was so desperate that she was willing to deceive the entire congregation.
Fame gives Sihle a big head
The audition went well, and everyone was praising Sihle’s singing abilities. Her grandmother was finally added to the chat group. But Martha couldn’t enjoy being part of the cool squad at church for too long. Sihle’s newfound fame got to her head, and she became unbearable. She even upset Lulu and that was the beginning of the end for her.
At the church’s first annual gospel showcase, Sihle thought her star would shine even brighter because of her “angelic” voice. However, Lulu was no longer interested in being a “puppet”. While Sihle was singing, Lulu flipped the script and changed the song mid performance and Sihle ended up looking like a clown on stage.
That moment left Gogo feeling embarrassed and she knew that the church ladies would never stop roasting her. Let this be a lesson to never try too hard to impress people!
