Yaya is putting her influence to good use. The Becoming star has revealed that she’s working on a book and hopes that it will change the narrative when it comes to transgender women.
On the latest episode of the Mzansi Magic reality show, Yaya told her friends: “There is a project that I’m working on. I feel like as a trans woman growing up in the rural areas, there are so many stories that are not told and that are told by other people. I thought actually what better way than writing a book about transgender women in South Africa.”
She revealed that she wants the title of her book to be “Trans Scars”.
Changing the narrative
What’s Yaya hoping to achieve through the book? Well, her wish is for every South African to read it because of the important message it will carry. “Whatever chapter it is, it has that message that will touch one family and it will change that narrative and also how South Africans view transgender women,” she said.
Yaya believes that trans visibility is very important. “It makes me so happy. I remember when I won a Feather Award for socialite of the year… For me, I knew I had fulfilled my purpose of visibility for transgender women.”
Yaya is on a mission
One of her missions in life is to inspire others to see that they can also achieve their goals. “I always say if I’m a bad actor or bad actress, it’s okay. I’m gonna try acting because I want the other trans girls to act,” Yaya said, adding that she wants to open doors for trans women.
“I want a trans woman to win a Mbokodo award, I want a trans woman to win a Glamour Woman of the Year Award. I want trans women to do amazing things, not just Yaya.”
