Becoming: Gina Sokoyi remembered by her loved ones

Gina’s sudden passing has left a gaping hole in the hearts of those who loved her dearly.

By Zimkhitha

The whole of Mzansi is in mourning at the news that Becoming star Gina has passed away after being hospitalised for Covid-1 that Gina’s friends have described her as someone who was loved by everyone. The Becoming star passed away after being hospitalised for Covid-19. Her death came as a shock to her friends and family because they were under the impression that she was getting better.

Her aunt Lisebo explained: “Before she went to the hospital, she was really struggling. When I saw her, she said she had a headache. The following day she called me and said the doctor had referred her to the hospital because she was diagnosed with Corona.”

Gone too soon

One of her close friends, Refilwe, said she had spoken to Gina the day she passed away. “We were talking about work and Gina was fine. Suddenly, she’s gone. I didn’t understand what was going on because I spoke to her earlier,” she said on the show.

Nobelungu, who is Gina’s cousin, was also shocked by her sudden passing. “She had been through the 14-day quarantine. She was getting better… We don’t know what killed her,” she said.

May your beautiful soul rest in peace Gina 🙏🏾♥️🕯🕊. Your journey has touched so many lives and it’s sad you left before witnessing that. Robala ka Kagiso mosadi o montle #Becoming #BecomingMzansi 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈 pic.twitter.com/5XMlMKynfJ

Loved by many

“Gina was my girl; she was my sister. We had that sisterly bond that went over and beyond friendship. The funeral was painful,” Refilwe said. She added that she always had a way to make everyone feel better.  Refilwe also couldn’t wrap her head around how young her friend was at the time of her death. “We should be buried when we’re old. We’re still young.”

Although Gina is gone, she has clearly left a lasting impact on everyone around her. Her friends spoke highly of her, also revealing that she made others believe in their dreams. “So many people looked up to her. She was loved,” Mamoya shared.

“If I were to speak to her now I’d say ‘thank you for pushing me into believing in my dreams. It’s painful because we all walked this path together,” Refilwe concluded.

Transitioning

Gina was in the process of transitioning and was very open about her journey on the show.

On the first episode of the show, she told her aunt, Lisebo, that she was ready to start with her surgeries. “The first two surgeries will be for breast implants and to get rid of my Adam’s Apple. And then there’s a surgery for my private parts, as well as to give me a larger bum so I can have a nice figure and be able to wear dresses.”

Gina also shared that people’s opinions didn’t really bother her. “I just think that the idea of someone changing their genital area to something else, maybe just makes other people feel uncomfortable. It just scares them or something, I don’t know. I won’t force people to understand.”

The full box-set of the series is available to stream on Showmax.
