Love him or hate him, AKA graciously volunteered to be Comedy Central’s latest Roast victim. The Plum List was there for the filming, and let’s just say that there were flames. (Yay!)
AKA is a controversial figure in South Africa. He’s made tabloid pages for everything from who he’s dating to why he’s breaking up with them – for the umpteenth time – and even his inability to grow a full beard.
Fight club!
Even the Roast Master has a history with AKA. Pearl Thusi MC’ed the roast, and despite their far-than-peaceful past, AKA has said: “It [our public feud] is water under the bridge. Pearl’s daughter and my daughter are best friends. Pearl has helped me with my daughter on several occasions. Pearl is actually family,” says AKA.
What to watch before the Roast of AKA
Before you sit down to take in all the insults and laughs at #GrudgmentDay, watch these shows to get in the zone:
1.Behind The Story: AKA
Find out more about the man behind the face and voice you know so well.
2.Behind The Story: Pearl Thusi
Get used to Pearl’s interviewing style as she meets a couple of SA’s best-known and most controversial stars.
3.Being Bonang
She dated AKA for a while, and they broke up and made up publicly a couple of times… you know that Queen B is going to be used as a weapon against the rapper. See if you can find any ammo in her show.
4.Comedy Central Roast of Somizi
Everyone from DJ Fresh and Gareth Cliff to government Minister of Fearfokol Fikile Mbalula takes aim at Mzansi’s most fabulous King of Bling and Louis Vuitton accessories. Watch if only for Somgaga shooting down his Roasters right at the end.
5.Comedy Central Roast of Kenny Kunene
SA’s most OTT businessman isn’t safe from Roasting… and it was his decision. He asked people like John Vlismas and Tumi Morake to tarnish what’s left of his public persona. And they don’t disappoint.
6.Roast of Donald Trump
Before he was the President of the USA, big Donny was a billionaire businessman famous for firing people on his reality show The Apprentice. On this Roast, he’s torn to shreds by Roast regulars Jeffrey Ross, Lisa Lampanelli and Gilbert Gottfried, as well as smooth-as-silk rapper Snoop Dogg. Just remember: what they’re saying about The Donald in this show was before they had an actual reason to hate him.
7.Roast Battle
Not in the mood for one celeb being torn a new one? Here’s a six-episode season of Roast Battle that pits comedy stars against each other just for the sake of flinging insults.
The Comedy Central Roast of AKA is now live on Showmax.
